Sirul : Senate agrees to new detention orders. Parliament to vote on Thursday.

Preventative detention amendments have been passed by the Senate. Under the new community safety detention orders, Sirul could be held for up to three years, and the orders would be reviewed each year.

They are not capped at three years necessarily, however the court would need to issue a new order every three years and those subjected to the new orders would be held in prison rather than immigration detention. The government already has a ready-made set of laws aimed at locking up people it considers too dangerous to be in the community.

The bill will now be voted on in the House of Representatives on Thursday, with MPs hauled back to Canberra to deal with the bill before the long summer break.
