UPM : Six Days Convocation : 5,695 Graduates. Malaysia Boleh!

The University Putra Malaysia 44th convocation will take six days!

There will be (drum roll please) 5,695 graduates :

• 398 recipients of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees;

• 1,093 recipients of Masters degrees.

• 3,544 recipients of Bachelor’s degrees.

• 660 recipeints of Diplomas.

Who will take a bow for these achievements (not)?

UMNO?

The Minister of Education?

The PM? Or maybe the government?

But there has been a marked decrease in the numbers of PHDs awarded this year! Last year, UPM awarded over 600 +++. This year, only 398. Will Umno demand a answer from UPM why this is so?

Or maybe the absurdity of awarding 600 +++ PHDs in a single year (when no world top 20 ranked University can produce more than 20 PHDs, might have something to do with it…but hey..if Umno wants an investigation, give them an investigation. I am sure they already have someone important from Umno to chair the investigation and get paid a hefty allowance for his troubles.

But I digress….

As I said, no university in the world top 20 rank can produce more than 20 PhDs in a year. The most number will be around 10. So why are these top ranked 20 university in the world not flocking to UPM to learn how UPM is able to churn out 398 PhD degrees this year!

May I suggest that even if they do flock to UPM to learn how it is done, the thought of having to import an UMNO tainted government as part of the deal, would be just a tad upsetting for anyone to stomach. So I guess they would rather do without an UMNO tainted government and not have so many PhD degrees!

This is what Lim Hwah Beng thinks of it all….I do not know who Lim is, but he seems to be able to comment on the absurdity of it all better than me. So this is what Lim says:

About 400 PhD’s from a single University for the year. How many professors or qualified academicians were assigned to monitor, check on and pass the 400 PhDs?

This is academic absurdity at its best. It would be a fantastic joke to laugh at in a lightheaded party if only it wasn’t detrimental to the future of educational standards of the country and would not make a mockery of the nation.

The rate it is going, we would have thousands and thousands of Permanent Head Deficiencies flooding our local universities to churn out more Permanent Head Disasters.
